Infertility in women is the inability to conceive children naturally. This condition can be caused by structural hormonal problems in the female reproductive system, which can be either genetic or the result of such disease as pelvic inflammatory disease or sexually transmitted diseases, malnutrition, hormone imbalances or deficiencies, excessive exposure to X rays or other radiation, advanced aging, and excessive stress or emotion upset. The conventional biomedical approach is to conduct a pelvic examination and battery of hormone blood tests, a semen and perm analysis on the woman’s sexual partner and additional specialized tests as needed, in some cases, fertility medication may be prescribed, and conduct a reproductive procedure, such as IVF, to help for the conceiving.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes reproduction is one of the primary functions of the KIDNEY in both men and women. The KIDNEY stores the essence and is responsible for the growth, development, reproduction, and normal functioning of all the other organs. TCM believed that if woman’s menstruation was normal, she was fertile. However, as practitioners of TCM, we know that women can be infertile and still have normal menstrual cycles, they incorporated modern biomedical understanding of infertility and female reproduction into their practice when treating women who had been unable to conceive or those with other conditions related to reproduction.
